Use the Deconstruction Workbench for unwanted gear

Evidence checked November 3, 2026 (Pacific) · PC Demo and announced release; original source dates retained

The short answer

Version 1.05 renames the Disassembly Workshop to the Deconstruction Workbench and says it can disassemble weapons and equipment. Old junk items intended for disassembly were removed. Searching for the old junk item or station name can therefore send you down the wrong path.

Check which item you are dealing with

The October 24–25 storage discussion separately describes removing sell-only junk and retaining/adding crafting materials. The 1.05 note describes disassembling equipment and weapons. Neither means every inventory object can be processed, that all materials have the same use, or that an old junk recipe remains valid.

Before confirming a breakdown

  1. Set aside equipment you actively use or want to compare. Use an estate chest for gear you are retaining.
  2. At the hub service, look for the current Deconstruction Workbench name. Follow any prerequisite actually displayed; no repair-cost table has been verified here.
  3. Inspect the selected item and the current result/confirmation prompt. We have no verified per-item yield table.
  4. Confirm only an item you are willing to lose. Compare the resulting inventory with the stated operation.

Treat socketed runes and cosmetic gear cautiously

Do not assume dismantling returns a socketed rune or preserves a transmog appearance. Rune removal itself is documented as destroying the removed rune; that is not proof of dismantling behavior. Transmog unlock rules are also unverified. Keep the item intact until the current interface or reliable evidence answers the relevant question.

If an old item or recipe is gone

Compare the version with the 1.05 redesign: materials and crafting/alchemy recipes changed, and old disassembly junk was removed. That is different from a deposited item disappearing from storage. Record the item name, station name, version and exact refusal/result. This page is not a complete crafting guide or an assurance that a breakdown can be undone.

You have chosen the correct route when…

You are using the current workbench for an eligible unwanted item, understand the confirmation and have preserved anything whose recovery or appearance rules are unknown.

Sources & version

Source-based explanation; no independent gameplay or file-transfer test. Original source dates retain their scope. Later notes establish the changes they explicitly describe; silence is not proof that every mechanic stayed identical.
