Remove a rune only if you can accept losing it

Evidence checked November 3, 2026 (Pacific) · PC Demo and announced release; original source dates retained

The short answer

Removing a socketed rune destroys that rune. Update 1.04 explicitly permits rune removal and states this cost. Removal is not a way to extract a valuable rune for another item or return it to inventory.

Decide what you want to keep

  • You want to keep using this rune: retain the socketed item rather than removing it on the assumption of recovery.
  • You want the existing rune out and accept its loss: inspect your build’s removal control and confirmation before acting.
  • You want to move the rune to different equipment: no recover-and-transfer operation is established by the reviewed source.

A careful removal check

  1. Read the actual item and socketed rune so you do not act on a different piece of equipment.
  2. Read the current removal prompt. Do not treat a similarly named deconstruction or sale action as rune removal.
  3. If the rune matters more than clearing it, cancel and keep the item intact.
  4. If you accept the destruction and proceed, inspect the item afterward. Do not expect the removed rune to appear as recovered stock.

Do not infer extra recovery rules

The announcement does not provide a universal removal fee, exact menu/hotkey, compatible replacement list or a guarantee about dismantling socketed equipment. A different RPG’s salvage rules do not apply by default. Nor should a backup be presented as an in-game undo slot: the Demo developer says separate manual slots are unavailable.

If your interface does not match

Record the build, item/rune names and exact choices shown. Stop before an irreversible confirmation if it is unclear whether you are removing the rune, destroying the item or selling it. Keep the equipment in estate storage while resolving that distinction.

The decision is complete when…

You either preserve the socketed rune by retaining the item, or knowingly accept the documented loss. A successful removal does not mean successful rune recovery.

Source-based explanation; no independent gameplay or file-transfer test. Original source dates retain their scope. Later notes establish the changes they explicitly describe; silence is not proof that every mechanic stayed identical.
